New Consequences For Downloading Media Illegally

If you download media illegally, beware. Starting today (November 28th), Internet service providers will begin enforcing the "Six Strikes" initiative against digital pirates. The program will allow I-S-Ps to directly penalize users who download pirated content. The penalties will vary for each I-S-P, and according to the Center for Copyright Information, could include: temporary reductions of Internet speeds, redirection to a landing page until the subscriber contacts the I-S-P to discuss the matter, or the user being forced to complete an online course about copyright laws before internet speed would be restored. Some I-S-Ps have even said they will "block access to frequently visited websites" as a penalty. (Huffington Post)

Verizon and Time Warner Cable say they won't pull the plug on customers as a result of piracy complaints from Hollywood movie studios and record labels as part of the "six strikes" program.
